  • Completely revised and updated reference for pheasant hunters
  • Guidance on making the best use of pointing dogs and advice on guns, gear, and ammo
  • Includes a variety of pheasant recipes

In this fully revised second edition, Steve Grooms shows why pheasant hunting is still one of the most exciting and rewarding ways to spend a day with your dog and a gun. Full of essential information for beginners and plenty of wisdom for more seasoned hunters, the book explains how to identify a good gun dog, what the well-equipped pheasant hunter needs before heading out, and how to prepare your body and mind for the hunt. Also included is advice on reading the landscape and evaluating hunting pressure so that you have the best chance of bagging the bird. Though pheasant were until recently dismissed as easy prey, Grooms champions the bird as a quick-witted and unpredictable target, and those who recognize the sport for what it is-challenging, absorbing, and exhilarating-will find this book a vital reference.

Farming, Hunting, and Fishing in the Olmec World (Linda Schele Series in Maya and Pre-Columbian Studies)

Farming, Hunting, and Fishing in the Olmec World (Linda Schele Series in Maya and Pre-Columbian Studies) Review

The Olmec who anciently inhabited Mexico's southern Gulf Coast organized their once-egalitarian society into chiefdoms during the Formative period (1400 BC to AD 300). This increase in political complexity coincided with the development of village agriculture, which has led scholars to theorize that agricultural surpluses gave aspiring Olmec leaders control over vital resources and thus a power base on which to build authority and exact tribute.

In this book, Amber VanDerwarker conducts the first multidisciplinary analysis of subsistence patterns at two Olmec settlements to offer a fuller understanding of how the development of political complexity was tied to both agricultural practices and environmental factors. She uses plant and animal remains, as well as isotopic data, to trace the intensification of maize agriculture during the Late Formative period. She also examines how volcanic eruptions in the region affected subsistence practices and settlement patterns. Through these multiple sets of data, VanDerwarker presents convincing evidence that Olmec and epi-Olmec lifeways of farming, hunting, and fishing were driven by both political and environmental pressures and that the rise of institutionalized leadership must be understood within the ecological context in which it occurred.

The Little Book of Flyfishing (Game & Fish Mastery Library)

The Little Book of Flyfishing (Game & Fish Mastery Library) Review

With great wit and a selection of memorable full-color photos, The Little Book of Fly Fishing investigates the world of fly fishing that most anglers are familiar with - not the flawless ideal presented in the pages of the monthly glossies. On these waters the big ones frequently get away, the fly is more likely to catch bushes, and slippery, moss-covered rocks land a fly fisher in the drink.

Note in a Bottle (Tom's Adventures in Alaska)

Note in a Bottle (Tom's Adventures in Alaska) Review

Young Tom is looking for adventure when he steps off the ferry in Kodiak. Even though he is dead tired he quickly finds a job as a greenhorn on a halibut boat and embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. Tom dodges tempers and hooks to find his place in the crew of the boat. His greatest challenge is staying out of the line of fire of the hot tempered Captain Vic. Tom learns the ropes from the old timers on the boat and gains their respect.

The sights and sounds of the Aleutian Islands bring this adventure to life and inspire Tom to endure the hardships and enjoy his time at sea. He jumps from the jaws of a shark and laughs at the antics that follow. Tom seeks out the memories and treasures; the greatest of them is a note in a bottle he picks out of the sand. This book is based on experiences the author had on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska. Coarse Language. 32500 words

Look for Book Two of Tom's Adventures in Alaska - The Bear Claw by Matthew Green also on Amazon!

Book three of the series Tom’s Adventures in Alaska: Ketchican or Bust to be released in January 2012!

About the series; Tom’s Adventures in Alaska

Tom feels the call of The Last Frontier and follows his feet to Alaska. He’d dreams of adventure and fate serves him adventures greater than he could have imagined. His story begins as he travels via ferry to Kodiak Island and starts work as a rooky commercial fisherman. Being a greenhorn not his dream job but because he’s broke and in a foreign land, he doesn’t have any other choice. He takes on the jobs thrust at him and befriends all he meets, well most anyway. Tom earns enough money fishing that he can afford to travel and have more adventures off of the fishing boat (and off of Kodiak Island).

Tom’s Adventures in Alaska takes place around Alaska and northwestern Canada. Tom travels through country so diverse and beautiful that words fail to do it justice. He survives storms at sea, and all of the treachery that fishing throws at him. He travels through amazing wilderness with all of the dangers that lurk in the wild. The people he meets are such a part of his adventures that their antics are a big part of the story. They are true Alaskans who face any challenge with lots of good humor and true friendship as is portrayed in every story. Each book is a continuation of the story but stands alone so characters are introduced and fade away in each; similar to the way it happens in real life.

Tom’s Adventures in Alaska isn’t only about commercial fishing. Tom goes beachcombing, hunting, sport fishing, gold panning and so much more. He fixes up a motorcycle and travels to places unknown. He lies on a picnic table to watch the Northern Lights, watches meteors shoot across the sky, and even has a bath with a moose. Tom falls in love (or lust) and his girlfriend takes him on a whirlwind adventure all on her own. Tom learns that she’s just like Alaska, wild and untamed. She’s sexy, feisty, and outspoken every chance she gets.

Tom’s stories are based on the real life adventures that the author had in Alaska in his youth. The people are real, the places are real, and the adventures are real. The bears are very real. Many of the people that some of the characters are based on are still alive, so names have been changed and events obscured to protect their identities. The series is written as fiction because some of the events described are based on stories told to the author on the fishing boat on which he worked. Some events are pure fiction. Beer stories and bear stories make for good fiction.

Tourism and the Consumption of Wildlife: Hunting, Shooting and Sport Fishing (Contemporary Geographies of Leisure, Tourism and Mobility)

Tourism and the Consumption of Wildlife: Hunting, Shooting and Sport Fishing (Contemporary Geographies of Leisure, Tourism and Mobility) Review

Consumptive forms of wildlife tourism (hunting, shooting and fishing) have become a topic of interest – both to the tourism industry, in terms of destinations seeking to establish or grow this sector, and to other stakeholders such as environmental organisations, animal-rights groups, and the general public. Hunting tourism, in particular, has come under fire with accusations that it is contributing to the demise of some species. Practices such as "canned hunting" (within fenced safari parks) or the use of hounds are described as unethical, and fishing tourism too has attracted recent negative publicity as it is said to be cruel. At the same time, however, many peripheral and indigenous communities around the world are strategising how to capitalise on consumptive forms of wildlife tourism.

This book addresses a range of contentious issues facing the consumptive wildlife tourism sector across a number of destinations in Europe, North America, Africa, India, Arabia and Oceania. Practices such as baited bear hunting, trophy hunting of threatened species, and hunting for conservation are debated, along with the impact of this type of tourism on indigenous communities and on wider societies. Research on all aspects of "consumptive wildlife tourism" is included, which for the purposes of the book is defined to include all tourism that involves the intended killing of wildlife for sport purposes, and may include the harvest of wildlife products. This includes, among others, recreational hunting, big-game hunting and safari operations, traditional/indigenous hunting, game-bird shooting, hunting with hounds, freshwater angling and saltwater game fishing etc.

This is the first book to specifically address tourist aspects of consumption of wildlife. It will appeal to tourism and recreation academics and students, tourism industry operators, community tourism planners and wildlife managers.
